CV Transforum Spring'17: New Data - The Benefits of Cath Lab Redesign, Transradial Access and Same-Day Discharge - Dr. Amit Amin

  April 19, 2017

Dr. Amin will present data and real life results on the benefits of cath lab redesign, transradial access and same- day discharge (SDD). This work was recently published in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions and quantifies the significant cost savings available to cath labs across the country. For the first time, in a nationally representative dataset of Medicare beneficiaries linked to the NCDR CathPCI Registry, PCI care pathways of TRI and SDD were associated with significantly lower costs compared with TFI and NSDD when examined from a hospital perspective. Furthermore, the magnitude of cost savings was large, exceeding $900 for TRI PCI and $3,500 for TRI PCI with SDD, implying that even small shifts in the current practice of TFI NSDD to TRI SDD by 30% could save a hospital performing 1,000 elective PCIs each year $1 million and the country $300 million annually.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a proven intervention to improve patient outcomes, reduce readmissions and engage patients post discharge. Despite its well-documented benefits, less than 20% of patients participate in rehab programs. As health care rapidly adopts value-based reimbursement models, novel approaches are needed to increase cardiac rehab participation. This webinar highlights evidence for the importance of cardiac rehab and explores proven strategies, tools and new technologies for expanding the impact of cardiac rehab to increase patient engagement and adherence, including home-based and hybrid models. It will also cover the business case for cardiac rehab within the 90-day cardiac bundle.
