Atlas Healthcare Partners was founded in 2018 to develop, manage, and grow Banner Health’s ASC network. Since then, Atlas has helped Banner more than triple their ASC footprint increasing its market share and ASC service line offerings. This service line growth includes the development and management of Banner Health’s first two Cardiovascular Surgery Centers. In May 2022 Atlas announced its health system partnership with newly formed BHSH System (Beaumont Health/Spectrum Health) to help establish and grow their ASC network throughout the state of Michigan.
Atlas is committed to providing exceptional care and outstanding customer service to every patient, every physician, every time and has a unique business proposition through its commitment to partnering with health systems and physicians.
Aric Burke, CEO of Atlas Healthcare Partners, talks about the ASC’s role in the healthcare ecosystem as well as Atlas’s business model. Atlas not only offers a convenient location for its patients and a lower cost of care for both the hospital and the patient, but also allows the physicians a convenient way to perform cases and gives that same convenience to the entrepreneurial investors in terms of managing both operations and the real estate.

MedAxiom – who is dedicated to cardiovascular organizational performance improvement – and Atlas Healthcare Partners – who specializes in developing and managing ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) announced the formation of a first-of-its-kind cardiovascular-focused ASC company. Together, Atlas and MedAxiom will transform cardiovascular care by expanding access to high quality, patient-centered heart care in ASCs.
In the past 10 years, we’ve seen Medicare shift many cardiovascular procedures to the outpatient site of service: PAD, EP implants, diagnostic coronary caths, PCI and complex PCI. In an unprecedented move, Medicare removed 255 cases from the ASC payable list for 2022, and several of these cases impact cardiovascular procedures. Optimism is still very high on cardiovascular outmigration with over 100 operational Cardiovascular ASCs and several dozen currently under development across the US.
CMS released the 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) in early July 2021. Major cuts were proposed for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) reimbursement in the office-based laboratory (OBL). If these proposed rates become finalized, there will be approximately a 20% reduction in reimbursement for PAD cases performed in the OBL, which will close the gap between OBL and ambulatory surgical center (ASC) reimbursement for PAD. Will this proposed cut for PAD reimbursement in the OBL be approved for 2022?
Whether they are Joint Ventures with Health Systems, independent cardiology groups or multi-specialty ASCs, there are many design considerations that should be evaluated as the type of cardiovascular procedures and other cardiovascular services in the ASC evolve.
Banner Health and Atlas Healthcare Partners have entered into a partnership with Cardiac Solutions to open a freestanding cardiovascular ambulatory surgery center (ASC). The partnership marks a crucial step in the development of a cardiology specific strategy for Banner Surgery Centers and is the result of an important provider and health system alignment.
