In today’s dynamic healthcare environment, effective marketing strategies are pivotal to navigating patient-centric paradigms. During CV Transforum Fall’24, Kim Kaylor, MedAxiom’s senior vice president of Marketing, and Cheyanne Reyome, MHA, marketing manager at Zywie, led an interactive session on the art of crafting successful marketing strategies tailored to patient-centric healthcare environments.
As competition among cardiovascular programs intensifies, Kaylor and Reyome argue that the same online review criteria that customers use to select a restaurant—such as reputation, food quality, and ease of access—can be applied to how patients select their healthcare providers. This shift to more digital communication platforms necessitates a comprehensive approach to marketing that prioritizes the patient experience.
The session also emphasized the importance of developing a compelling content mix for patients. Practices must educate patients about their services and highlight differentiators that set their programs apart from competitors in the market. The content should be engaging and interactive to combat short attention spans and content fatigue among potential patients.
For this reason, Kaylor emphasized the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration between marketing teams and cardiovascular professionals. “Marketing is no longer the sole responsibility of a single team,” said Kaylor. “It’s an intricate ecosystem that requires input from various stakeholders.” This collaborative approach can lead to more effective strategies that resonate with patients.
To thrive in this increasingly complex environment, practices must continuously evaluate their market position. Factors such as consolidation, mergers, and the influx of private equity into the cardiovascular space can alter competitive dynamics. Understanding why patients may choose a competitor is essential for developing and executing effective marketing strategies.
One key takeaway from the session was the importance of segmenting messages to different audiences to generate a quick win for practices. Tailoring marketing efforts to distinct patient populations can lead to improved engagement and loyalty. “Patients appreciate personalized content that speaks to their specific needs and experiences,” said Kaylor.
Reyome presented a case study from a cardiovascular program that faced competition from larger health systems in the same market. The program’s physician referral strategy alone wasn’t generating enough new patients. By implementing robust search engine optimization strategies, developing a new website and personalizing content, the practice experienced a remarkable increase of 3,200 new patients within a year, generating over $3 million in revenue with a minimal marketing budget. The practice’s growth was driven by data-driven content creation tailored to market research on two segmented audiences within their patient populations.
Kaylor and Reyome concluded that ongoing collaboration and regular feedback loops between marketers and cardiovascular professionals are essential for building an impactful strategy and capitalizing on opportunities. This partnership enables cardiovascular programs to adapt quickly to market changes and patient needs, ensuring that their marketing efforts remain relevant and impactful.
