Profiles of Excellence: Dr. Xiaoyan Huang

Tuesday, March 15, 2016 | MedAxiom

MedAxiom is honored to welcome top CV thought leaders to present at our conferences throughout the year. Dr. Xiaoyan Huang, President-Elect and Invasive Cardiologist at Providence Milwaukie Hospital in Portland, OR, is one such leader. She will be discussing the National Committee on Quality Assurance standard for transforming specialty care—Patient Centered Specialty Practice—at our CV Transforum Spring’16 conference on April 9th in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. We hope you will be joining us there to learn more about this and other key health care advances. For now, here is a brief conversation with Dr. Huang for our Profiles of Excellence blog post.

1. What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

Taking care of patients—making them feel better and enjoy their lives better—is the most important and fulfilling part of my work. Also, I enjoy learning, thinking, and writing about health policy: how do we measure performance, improve quality, make health care more efficient, and provide better valued care on a population level?

2. If you could choose any job outside of health care, what would it be?

A chef.

3. What is your favorite leisure activity?

I enjoy many things outside of work: exercising, cooking, eating, and spending time with family and friends. Luckily for me, these are not in conflict: I watch Food Network while on the treadmill, then go home and cook or go explore a new restaurant with family and friends.

4. Where do you hope to go on your next vacation?

Southeast Asia

5. What books are you reading?

I am currently reading The Lost Continent by Bill Bryson. Recent reads I would highly recommend include: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and Tenth of December by George Saunders.

6. The name of the last movie or live performance you saw . . . thumbs up or down?

Brooklyn, and I give it a “Thumbs Up.”

7. What are the biggest challenges facing cardiovascular health care today?

Figuring out how to make the transition from private practice to being employed in big health systems: the governance, organization culture, incentive, compensation and fostering a sense of engagement, a drive towards excellence and professional pride. We know more than 2/3 of cardiologists are employed now, but we have not figured out how to deliver care in big integrated systems.

8. What are you most looking forward to at the CV Transforum Spring’16 Conference?

Finding out how other cardiology practices are doing, sharing our experiences, learning from the MedAxiom consultants, reviewing the MedAxiom survey data, and doing a good job with my talk!
