PROGRAM OVERVIEW

MedAxiom has partnered with Washburn University’s already outstanding accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program to help create an easy pathway for students to enroll in this unique program. 
The university’s sonography program has an exclusive partnership with MedAxiom to offer a pathway to stabilize your ultrasound workforce by putting the cardiovascular organization in the driver's seat.

Who Is This Program For?

This program is designed for those interested in starting a healthcare career in ultrasound. Typical roles include healthcare professionals looking to expand their knowledge base, recent high school graduates, or students in the early stages of college. For those interested in the MedAxiom pathway to Washburn’s program, we require a CV organizational sponsor for funding and for clinical site instruction. 

Clinical SITE PREREQUITES

The cardiovascular organization will provide clinicals for the student(s) in their own ultrasound lab and hands-on training in their own ultrasound department. 

  • Ability to host the potential student for at least half-day shadowing experience prior to application deadline
  • Internet access to include audio and visual
  • Clinicals will be provided by the CV organization in their own ultrasound labs. Program instructions are provided by Washburn University to the CV organization.
    • Cardiac Requirements:
      • Each cardiac learning concentration affiliate or clinical education center should perform approximately 800 completed patient examinations, including permanent records and reports, per year, per student equivalent.
      • The overall volume of procedures in which students participate throughout the program should represent the range of cardiac procedures. 
      • There must be at least one sonographer with RCS or RDCS on staff full-time.
    • Vascular Requirements:
      • Each vascular learning concentration affiliate or clinical education center should perform approximately 1,000 completed patient examinations, representative of the range of vascular procedures, including permanent records and reports, per year, per student equivalent.
      • The overall volume of procedures in which students participate throughout the program should represent the range of non-invasive vascular procedures. 
      • There must be at least one sonographer with RVS or RVT credentials on staff full-time.

STUDENT Prerequisites

 

Student must shadow at the clinical site prior to applying

Basic medical science and interpersonal communication education is required as a foundation for the clinical role of the diagnostic medical sonographer. All prerequisite courses must be completed at the post-secondary/college-level education courses with a letter grade of C or higher. 

Only one course is required in each category:

  • Communication (Examples: English, Comp or Speech)
  • Human Anatomy (if combined with Human Physiology, Human A&P I and II must be taken)
  • Human Physiology (if combined with Human Anatomy, Human A&P I and II must be taken)
  • Mathematics (examples: Intermediate Algebra, Algebra, Statistics or Trigonometry)
  • Physics (Examples: General Physics course, no lab required or Radiographic Physics, if in or a graduate of a Radiologic Technology program)
  • Medical Terminology

BENEFITS OF THE MEDAXIOM PATHWAY

  • Financial Sponsorship - MedAxiom will invoice the organization directly for the “save your spot” deposit and full tuition at the start of the program. No need for FAFSA forms or tuition reimbursements.
  • Student Pre-Screening - MedAxiom reviews the student’s academic records before they are passed on to Washburn University to help evaluate student eligibility. This allows the student to meet all the Washburn criteria before going through the process of applying.
  • Clinical Experience Exception - Washburn allows for MedAxiom pathway students who may not come from a clinical background to still be considered for this program.*
    • *Students must complete all the required courses even if granted the clinical experience exception
  • External Resources – MedAxiom is happy to connect you to other successful programs on how best to optimize this pathway for your CV organization. We also offer access to templates for student to staff agreements.

IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES

Now through February 1, 2026 – submit unofficial transcripts to MedAxiom for pre-screening, student will need to enroll in any missing courses if completed in May 2026. If you are new to the MedAxiom pathway, you will need to submit an affiliation agreement.

February 1, 2026 – deadline for “Save your Spot” deposit, student name, and MedAxiom paperwork to be submitted.

February 1, 2026 through March 1, 2026 – Washburn official application process begins, student will be fully responsible for Washburn application elements such as submitting formal transcripts, scheduling observation at your clinical site, obtaining letters of recommendation from clinicians, etc.

March 1, 2026 through May 1, 2026 – Washburn will contact student directly when eligibility is confirmed. Future communication will be with student and Washburn University. MedAxiom is here for any outlying questions/concerns.
