As a Care Transformation Services Consultant, Mark McDonald applies his extensive experience in hospital operations to develop business and management strategies and tools to advance pediatric cardiovascular programs within the MedAxiom membership. In this role, Mark applies his extensive experience and knowledge as a thought leader in healthcare.

Mark is currently the vice president (VP) of Business Operations at Nemours Children’s Hospital supporting the departments of Surgery, Orthopedics, Cardiac Center and the Advanced Delivery Unit. Most recently, he was the VP and executive advisor for strategic planning and business development at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He previously served as the vice president of finance and business operations at the Heart Institute since its inception in 2009. He subsequently assumed operating responsibility for the Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute with a similar scope. Combined, the institutes represented approximately $1B in charges and were highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report. At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the Institute VP role was responsible for the integration of the clinical and research missions, strategic planning and daily operational business management. The Heart Institute encompassed cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, elements of other medical specialties, and basic science research as a completely integrated service line. Mark spent a decade at Kaiser Permanente in management engineering, followed by serving as the VP for the cardiovascular service line at the Health Alliance, and chief operating officer at the Ohio Heart and Vascular Center

He has authored over 50 abstracts and publications in peer-reviewed journals on various topics ranging from developing operational efficiencies for central support services to strategic planning. The articles reflect extensive experience in private practice administration, integrated delivery networks, adult and pediatric cardiovascular service line development and management.

Mark received his Master of Arts degree in anthropology from the University of Cincinnati. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American College of Medical Practice Executives.
