Surgical Care Affiliates Joins OptumCare division of UnitedHealth Group; Grows CV Service Line

SCA has announced their merger with OptumCare, a leading health services company and part of UnitedHealth Group. The combination of SCA with OptumCare, Optum’s primary and urgent care delivery services business working with more than 80 health plans, will position the combined organization as a comprehensive provider of ambulatory care services, while continuing expansion of SCA’s network of Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASCs) and Surgical Hospitals in partnership with leading health systems, medical groups and health payers. The combination builds upon the two companies’ successful ASC collaborations and expands OptumCare’s capabilities in outpatient surgical procedures.

The merger will:  

• Advance SCA’s Vision of becoming the partner of choice for surgeons and its overall Mission to improve health care in America;
• Further align SCA with health plans and medical groups seeking to achieve the Triple Aim of health care by providing the option to move selected clinically appropriate CV services into an outpatient setting;
• Enable the development of better tools to help independent physicians – SCA’s primary customers – to succeed in the years to come, including support for physician practices dealing with an increasingly complex and value-based environment.

SCA is growing its CV service line by adding procedures to its existing ASCs and surgical hospitals, purchasing equity in existing outpatient CV facilities, and building CV–specific de novo outpatient facilities. SCA also provides support to employed and independent practices interested in partnership opportunities for outpatient procedures.  

SCA is a leader in outpatient surgical care, with an asset base of 205 Ambulatory Surgical Centers and Surgical Hospitals across the US. System-wide, SCA and its affiliates serve approximately 1 million patients per year in more than 30 states.
