Dr. Richard Schatz: A Trailblazer in Cardiology Joins Imago Systems

Dr. Schatz was the Research Director, Cardiovascular Interventions and the Director, Gene and Stem Cell Therapy at the Scripps Heart, Lung, and Vascular Center for over 30 years. His groundbreaking work in coronary stents has transformed the treatment of coronary artery disease, impacting millions of lives worldwide. With over 2 million coronary stents placed annually, his contributions have significantly reduced mortality and morbidity, while also lowering healthcare costs.

His career highlights include serving at the Letterman Army Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Duke University where he is currently an adjunct Professor of Medicine and Cardiology. Dr. Schatz's collaboration with Dr. Julio Palmaz led to the development of the pioneering Palmaz-Schatz stent, which the FDA approved in 1994. This innovation marked a new era in treating coronary disease and remains one of the most significant medical device patents in the last 50 years.

Dr. Schatz's work in angiogenesis, gene transfer, and stem cell therapy, in collaboration with the late Jeffrey Isner, introduced new methods for treating angina and improving heart function post-heart attacks. His numerous accolades include awards from Duke University Medical Center and the Hong Kong Cardiology Society, and he is an elected fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the National Academy of Inventors. He also won the prestigious Russ Prize for biomedical engineering in 2019, considered the American Nobel Prize.

"I am excited to join forces with Imago Systems," said Dr. Schatz. "Their technology is a game changer and their commitment to advancing the science of medical imaging aligns perfectly with my own research goals. Together, we have the potential to revolutionize the way medical images are analyzed and interpreted, leading to faster diagnoses, more effective treatments, and ultimately, improved patient outcomes."
