The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) has made a significant contribution to pediatric and neonatal cardiac care by publishing two new guidelines. These guidelines, featured in the February 2024 issue of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, reflect substantial advancements in the understanding and application of echocardiography for children and neonates.
The first guideline, "Guidelines for Performing a Comprehensive Pediatric Transthoracic Echocardiogram," is a pivotal update to ASE's earlier documents from 2006 and 2010. It introduces a unified organizational framework and a standardized language for echocardiographic practices in diagnosing and managing congenital or acquired heart diseases in children.
The second guideline, "Guidelines and Recommendations for Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography and Cardiac Point-of-Care Ultrasound in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," updates and expands the ASE's 2011 guidelines. This document provides clear distinctions and recommendations for targeted neonatal echocardiography (TNE) and cardiac point-of-care ultrasound (cPOCUS).
“These publications underscore ASE's commitment to advancing cardiovascular ultrasound to improve patient care,” said Jaime Warren, EdD, MBA, BHS, CNMT, NCT, MedAxiom vice president of Care Transformation Services. Both guidelines can be accessed through ASE's website, ASEcho.org/Guidelines, and are testament to ASE's standing as a global leader in cardiovascular ultrasound imaging.
