Reimbursement Relief May be Realized as Vector Remote Care’s CPT 93296 Revaluation Initiative Heads to CMS OPPS Ruling in July

In 2024, Vector Remote Care, a leader in cardiac remote monitoring solutions, launched a grassroots initiative to revalue CPT code 93296 – championing what clinicians and administrators have long recognized: the reimbursement for remote interrogations of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) does not reflect the complexity or clinical value of the service. The movement, which galvanized support from across the electrophysiology community, also finds validation in the 2023 HRS/EHRA/APHRS/LAHRS expert consensus statement on practical management of the remote device clinic. This expert guidance recognizes that under-recognition of the “invisible work” involved in remote monitoring impairs operational efficiency and staff well-being. As the consensus notes, “lack of formalized policies to perform the ‘invisible work’ of RM prevents personnel from performing at the top of their license, especially if also tasked with other non-RM responsibilities. This leads to job dissatisfaction, burnout and high staff turnover in under-resourced teams.” With the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) set to release its Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) ruling in early July, the alignment between policy advocacy and clinical consensus adds urgency – and legitimacy – to calls for long-overdue reform.

CPT code 93296, which covers the technical work required to deliver remote monitoring for CIED patients, has not been revised since 2018 to reflect the operational and clinical realities of today’s healthcare environment. The revaluation seeks to address that gap, offering practices a path toward more accurate reimbursement and enabling broader adoption of guideline-directed remote care.

“CPT 93296 revaluation is not just about financial alignment – it’s about supporting the infrastructure that makes safe, effective remote monitoring possible,” said Kevin Hoffman, Vector Remote Care CEO. “Clinics are under increasing pressure to deliver high-quality care with limited resources. Revaluing CPT code 93296 helps bridge that gap.”

Key benefits of the revaluation include:

  • Improved reimbursement rates for remote monitoring infrastructure and staffing.
  • Enhanced financial sustainability for clinics providing remote monitoring of CIEDs.
  • Support for guideline-directed care, aligning reimbursement with evidence-based clinical practices.
